Thyme
Thymus vulgaris L. and T. zygis L. — herb (Thymi herba)
Groupé ici sous Colds, cough and throat. Position réglementaire :Monographie végétale UE — usage traditionnel.
Ce que les preuves soutiennent
L’indication enregistrée :As an expectorant in cough associated with a cold.
Thyme syrups and cough teas are traditional-use registered across the EU, and it is worth translating what the indication actually claims. "Expectorant" means helping a productive cough shift what is there. It does not mean stopping the cough, shortening the illness, or treating an infection. The kitchen jar and the pharmacy preparation are the same species. Thymol, thyme's main essential-oil constituent, is a real disinfectant used in mouthwashes and dental preparations, and that is where the plant's antibacterial reputation comes from — but antibacterial activity in a laboratory dish is not evidence that a cough tea treats a chest infection, and treating those two facts as one is the mistake this page exists to prevent.
C — Traditional use only Plausible from thirty or more years of use, which is what a traditional-use registration means. No clinical evidence was required and none has settled it.
Ce à quoi ce n’est pas destiné
A cough with high fever, breathlessness, chest pain or coughed-up blood, a cough lasting more than about three weeks, or any cough in a person with a chronic lung condition that is behaving differently. Those need assessment.
Forme, force et durée
Dried herb as an infusion, syrups, tinctures and liquid extracts, usually blended with ivy leaf, primrose root or liquorice. Thyme essential oil is a concentrated product for external and inhalational use.
Durée.Short-term use over the course of a cold; monograph texts direct people to seek advice if the cough persists beyond about a week.
Stomach upset and allergic reactions, including cross-reaction with other mint-family (Lamiaceae) herbs and, in some people, with birch and celery pollen. Undiluted thyme oil is irritant to skin and mucous membranes.
Qui devrait l’éviter
Essential-oil preparations are not for the face of infants and small children. Not established in pregnancy for medicinal amounts; culinary thyme is a food.
