Echinacea
Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench — herb and root (Echinaceae purpureae herba, Echinaceae purpureae radix)
Groupé ici sous Colds, cough and throat. Position réglementaire :Monographie végétale UE — usage traditionnel.
Ce que les preuves soutiennent
L’indication enregistrée :Short-term prevention and treatment of the common cold.
The best-selling cold herb in the Nordics and Baltics, and the one whose evidence has been argued over for thirty years without resolution. Part of the reason is that echinacea is not one thing: three species are used (E. purpurea, E. angustifolia, E. pallida), root and aerial parts have different chemistry, and pressed juice, tincture and dried extract are three different preparations. Systematic reviews land somewhere around a small possible effect on how often colds occur and an unclear effect on how long they last; NCCIH's summary of the research says the evidence is not strong. The monograph is clear about one thing that matters practically: this is for short-term use started at the first signs, not a tonic taken all winter.
C — Traditional use only Plausible from thirty or more years of use, which is what a traditional-use registration means. No clinical evidence was required and none has settled it.
Ce à quoi ce n’est pas destiné
Influenza, pneumonia, sinus infection or any illness with high fever and breathlessness. A cold that gets worse after a week, rather than better, is a reason to be seen.
Forme, force et durée
Expressed juice of fresh flowering herb, tinctures, dried extracts and lozenges. Products differ so much that experience with one says little about another.
Durée.Short courses, typically up to about ten days. The monographs do not support continuous seasonal use.
Allergic reactions are the notable ones — rash, itching, and rarely severe reactions — and they are more likely in people with existing allergies or asthma. Daisy-family (Asteraceae) sensitivity is the relevant cross-reaction. Stomach upset and a tingling tongue from tinctures.
Qui devrait l’éviter
Monograph texts contraindicate it in progressive systemic disorders including tuberculosis, sarcoidosis, autoimmune diseases, multiple sclerosis and HIV infection, and in people taking immunosuppressants, because it is presented as immune-stimulating. Most preparations are not for children under 12. Not established in pregnancy.
Interactions avec les médicaments
| Médicament ou substance | Ce qui est décrit |
|---|---|
| Immunosuppressants and transplant medicines | Echinacea is sold as an immune stimulant while transplant and autoimmune medicines work by suppressing immunity. The two are pulling in opposite directions, and the monograph contraindication reflects that rather than a measured drug level. |
